DVDs used to be a huge seller back in the day, but they've been declining in sales since what? 2000? 2001? Why go to a dumpy store in a bad part of town to buy or rent one DVD when you can go online and get access to thousands of DVDs online? I was GM of ICS at Playboy; Playboy is into things most people don't know about - lots of hardcore stuff. Playboy's primary business model for years was DVDs, but they knew that was ending and they were moving into online stuff (such as ICS itself).

This is like saying "the music industry is in a slump because they are not selling any records" while never mentioning the fact that everyone is buying music online.

The adult industry has grown up. We no longer visit "adult book stores" and jerk off in video booths in the back. Magazines are dead as a doorknob.

The other day on a message board someone tried to school me about "what was wrong with porn today" and said the quality of it sucked compared to what was being produced in the 1980s? I nearly fell out of my chair when I read that. Porn sold well in the 1980s because of the new technology that was pushing it; Again, we moved away from seedy bookstores and movie theaters to VHS where you can view the porn in the privacy of your bedroom. That's what was fueling porn in the 1980s, not it's crappy quality.

I was thinking of posting a link to that article but you beat me to it MP.

With advances in technology we all have to find ways to adapt.

The journalist did get some interesting quotes from some big players. But I'm sure he still edited them to fit his personal take on the industry.

For example: I think Girlfriends Films are doing well not just because they are hot on dealing with piracy, but because a lot of their films are plot driven with interesting story lines, and not just a series of sex scenes stuck together. They sell rather better to women than most lesbian porn does as well. I wonder if Dan O’Connell said anything about that.

Plot orientated porn - lesbian, straight, whatever - is generally good for selling to women and m/f couples who watch porn together. I think you'll find that Nica Noelle - who used to write, direct and perform lesbian porn for Girlfriends using the name Sydni Ellis - is doing pretty well with her two studios: Sweetheart Video (lesbian) and Sweet Sinner (hetero).
