the first spam mail i read entirely

Dear Valued Customer,

This is something I learned this morning... I stopped by a local coffee shop to put up some flyers and two patrons of said coffee shop inquired about my services. Unfortunately, I was totally unprepared (it was, after all, 8:30 AM), so I fumbled for a business card and said, "Great, here's my card. Call me when you're ready."

What a complete bonehead!!!

After I sat down and thought about it (and was chastised by a friend), I realized that a couple things went right:

- I posted flyers
- I handed out two business cards to inquiring individuals

But I also failed miserably:

- I did NOT discuss any generalized prices with either customer.
- I did NOT ask either customer if I could get in touch with them at a later date to discuss this.
- I did NOT offer either customer one of my super cool promotional tee shirts.

One of those custom tee shirts I had printed up could make or break a several thousand dollar deal for me, just because it lands in the right hands, has my contact info on it and oh yeah, has a kickbutt design on it that just screams. As it is, the business card I gave each of them will probably end up in the laundry same as a tee shirt would except after washing a business card you cant read it.

YIKES!

The lesson - face-to-face visits are an excellent way to hook up with customers and are very possibly completely unexpected. Just like a good little Boy Scout, always be prepared.

All-in-all, I'd say face-to-face meetings are the real world of business. Just make sure that you're well-prepared. Consider potential objections or questions to prepare mentally for answering any of the questions posed. And always have some advertising handy something that has your name on it that you can give away or wear around. Something like a custom printed tee shirt.
