In 1940 it cost forty cents to have a tooth extracted by a dentist.
That is 93% of one hour's work at minimum wage in 1940.

Malpractice insurance was a lot cheaper then. A lot less equipment, too. Plus, people didn't take care of their teeth like they do know, so the dentist probably just had to give the tooth a good flick and it's out.
