or do any surfer that knows about bookmarking enough to ever use it already also knows how to bookmark?

They seem sort of 80's to me. I don't use them. Though, on a legit regularly updated site, adding in those facebook/twitter/etc buttons couldn't hurt.

Throw it up with a clicktracker, and see if it ever actually gets clicked though. Surfers never cease to amaze me.

I often put them on sites that are frequently updated. I don't know if anyone uses it to add the site to their bookmarks. But I like to add some text around it like "Come Back Tomorrow For New Photos". I think that helps get surfers to return.

I actually wrote down a reminder to myself while I was out the other day to add a 'click here to bookmark' link/button.

Basic call to action imo - tell the punter what to do. You 100% won't lose any bookmarkers by telling them to do so, and you 100% will get extra ones.

Don't want to hijack the thread but does it pay off to have your adult site on facebook/twitter? How do you get people to add your facebook page/twitter feed?

Yes it helps to have it on Twitter from my personal experience. The followers just come to it, when they do searches and whatnot. For example, I feed a new post to Twitter every time I make a new post on my blogs and that's always instant Twitter traffic.

Twitter doesn't mind adult?

The official Twitter rules say:

Pornography: You may not use obscene or pornographic images in either your profile picture or user background

A lot of pornstars use twitter to talk about sex and drive customers to their official sites (and contests like Miss Freeones). The ones that I've seen only post non-nude candid photos. A couple have mentioned that they're worried about being banned for nude pics. So I wouldn't worry about linking to adult sites and talking about porn. But you might be careful about posting NSFW pics.

How are you guys doing it? A blog post excerpt gets tweeted? Even if its all hardcore text?

Additionally to what Buncha said, do not use Twitpic to host your adult images for Twitter but other services that allows adult images. Shap from Twistys has SexyPeek.com which is the only service I know of that is adult friendly.

wouldn't it be better to host your own images rather than give free traffic away?

Personally I don't think anyone would set an adult site as his/her homepage, but hey, that's just me :)

Sharing button is good, strictly a bookmark button isn't really worth putting up. That's my experince at least.
