Can anyone point to anything that might show me how to create nice looking galleries?

keep it simple, not much for needing a tutorial on galleries, look at how other galleries are setup on some popular TGPs or MGPs and go from there.

At first, take your look at Thehun.com. Learn this site's galleries but my soviet - than simple gallery than better - Hun loves simple galleries. Then download frontpage, then download gallery of your favourite sponsor (FHG). With photoshop do from big pictures - small thumbs (width 200 - 250). Then create gallery -
top->bottom:
a link to Hun
Short description
thumbs
again description or no
Banner or link to your sponsor

Submit url - http://submit.thehun.net/
Freeones.com (huge free tgp like Hun)

GIve it an <h1> title, make a table with 3 rows and 5 columns, make 15 thumbs, give them alt=" " tags, link the thumbs to the full size image give the links title=" " tags, write a description, add a banner and/or a descriptive text link. Maybe but a banner after the first row of 5 thumbs, then 2 more rows of 5 and another banner or text. KISS (keep is simple stupid). I bought some cool designed heavy graphic galleries once, Hun wouldn't list them... complete waste of money and time.

Panky did a great tutorial a few years ago at the pond:

Thank you!
I'm pretty sure I did one for Shemp's Place as well some time ago. I'll see if I can find it here. Might be in the tutorials section.

Use the tutorial that is linked here at MP please.

I had a look at the one posted at the Pond and links are dead. Besides, the NP tutorial used a sponsor that I'm not interested in being associated with anyway, which is probably why the links are dead. I remember house cleaning one of my servers too and NP things definitely didn't make the cut.

Mark6188 also did a blog tutorial on how he builds galleries here on the forum that might be of some interest to you. - http://bbs.mediumpimpin.com/entry.php?b=39 :wiggles:

has anything new come out in the last couple years to help automate the process? any freeware to create the css and html for you leaving a spot for some customization of the header or changing colors etc?

Some good advice above Mike. Just keep it simple and clean. Work the sales text as good as you can. Submit around and see what works for you and what doesn't. Definitely take a look on Shemp's site and get a feel for what most people are doing. Some galleries will be different, but if you look at enough you will start to see common themes between most of them.

a lot of webmasters use the sponsors hosted galleries, clean them up a little bit and upload to their own server...and then submit to the tgps/mpgs ....

does that actually get their submissions accepted?

does that actually get their submissions accepted?

Well, if they continue to do it, I would imagine it would.

Also your gallery should have at least 15 pics to get listed at most places

I think what most webmasters overlook, is that when you put the effort into picking content, hand cropping thumbs, and whatever else you may do to set your galleries apart from the crowd, it is not the surfer you have to impress (at least not right away ...), but rather the site owners/reviewers ...

If your gallery does not impress them first, chances are it wont get listed at the sites who's traffic counts ..

Food for thought. :bax:

With Wordpress besides Dreamweaver I work with uugallery and robogallery for semi-automated galleries.

I do my own using wordpress. Takes about 10 minutes to pull anywhere from 9 to 30 pics (depending on how many I feel like doing), download them, bash out 100-150 words of text and upload the files to the post. Wordpress will automatically create the thumbs and link to the file so I just insert the gallery link into the post from the image uploader and done.
