I call up Comcast - a cable company here in Miami - to ask about increasing my internet account to the higher download speed. I figure a step up from 12 mbps to 16 is worth the few extra bucks. If you listen to the fucking turtle on TV they even have "Power Boost." Cool, so I call up and start asking about it.

Get this...

I'm thinking I get the 16 PLUS the 'boost.' Hell no. But that's not the best part. Are you sitting down? He tells me the 'Power Boost' IS the advertised rate and it only runs for a couple of minutes then it drops down to half... Holy shit!

I looked into AT&T Uverse. Got me at 18mbps the same channel line up as comcast AND my home phone and I save $20 per month. Not a huge savings but at least their speeds are relatively constant. I can even go to a business account and get

I know the advertised speeds are on the high side for everyone, but shit if you tell me my speed is going to drop after a short time then I say fuck you and see you later. Waste my money elsewhere thank you very much.

That's pretty damn good dude. I looked into Verizon's FiOS but they don't service my area. Shit, they have up to 50mbps.

My upload is still a measely 1.5 :(

Just avoid Time Warner, they're toying with the idea of charging internet users based on usage

That would suck for the end user but if they can get away with it it might be a good move for them.

Well they're pissing off a lot of people with the idea so far including a NY congressman (http://www.news-record.com/content/2009/04/08/article/congressman_vows_to_stop_time_warners_new_pricing_ plan)

Ya there are other commercials saying that "Power Boost" is a crock of shit. I am upgrading my internet to 18 next month myself, my DSL sucks ass, says I have 7mbps but I'm lucky to get 6 out of it.

i get the speed i pay for, power boost is just a nice additional feature, its good in uploading.. first 25mb(might be more) is 2x the speed you pay for..

i download at steady 1.2mb/s with powerboost i top out at 3mb/s for a few minutes which gets you a good 100mbs real fast.
