This is similar to my last post...
To those who submit both:
Which brings in more money for you?
How much time do you put in for each?

its easier to build and submit galleries to a TGP, than free sites to a linklist. Money wise, its really up to you, ive seen a lot of money made from both and ive seen guys go broke from both.

Losing money...I'm guessing because of bandwidth costs?

bandwidth, content, living expenses. et et.
I've always thought that free sites were better for a newbie to start out promoting, simply because you have more chances to sell the same surfer before giving him/her free content. Learn how to market on free sites, if you can by using link campaign codes with your sponsors. See what gets clicked most, and you can start to tweak your marketing. I know flash cash offers this, can't remember who else...

Free sites are really useful for getting the spiders to index you. Good for building a network and making alot of money off that. You gotta work hard long term for it though.
Galleries are more wham bam than you ma'am I'll take my check now. The real money's in building good galleries and getting the art down.
Either way you're not gonna get rich quick, so why not dedicate some time to both, keep at it and if it works out in a year you'll be living comfortably
