If you had a generic sounding domain name, lets just say porn.com, in what ways would it be beneficial to sub-domain it to deal with different niches?

Forgetting for a moment about it all being on the same IP address.

I've noticed that no one has brought this up (about sub-domaining). Maybe it's a given that you just don't. But if people could discuss the pro's, con's and stretch themselves a bit to consider how it could work then I'd love to hear a whole mess of different viewpoints.

Pro's: If you want to build a network of blogs under the same name and you want to brand that name then subdomains are the way to go. Let's take wallmart as an example: People will rather visit shoes.wallmart.com and music.wallmart.com than wallmartshoes.com or wallmartmusic.com
Ok this example sucks but you get the point :)

So if you go with subdomains the blog will always be "a part of a network" where an individual domain will be something that stands more on it's own.

Pretty much having seperate (and completely different) domain names and linking them effectively makes a network.

But I see your point. It's a BRANDED network. :)

I say sub-domains.
Say you do have porn.com
You set that up as the main hub, so porn.com/index.php is your mixed blog.
It imports all your sub-domain niche blog's RSS feeds.
You do each sub-domain then as a niche using nice keywords.
amateur-babes.porn.com
anal-sluts.porn.com
asian_hotties.porn.com
What ever you want and as many niches as you can handle and update often.
porn.com/index.php pulls in their RSS feeds and as links out to them all.
You can then set up niche trades with the sub-domain blogs which should rank higher then trying to link into a mixed blog.
