I'd say "Have fun, don't stay out too late!"

She's 14, she probably had sex already.... it's all good.

Well, my parents wouldn't have let a 14 year old date. I probably wouldn't either. I don't think they're mature enough to make rational deceisions at that age.

I went to one of the best high schools in the state...lots of rich families in the suburbs...and out of like 35 girls in my graduating class, I think about 10 had babies before they graduated. That doesn't include abortions. I think the rate is higher at city schools.

I'd probably let my daughter start dating around 17...16 if I was feeling really liberal and she was on the pill and had a supply of condoms. My parents let us date after we got our driver's licenses. Teenagers have sex...fact of life.

Hell, I went to church as a teen and I was in a group of teens that all pledged to remain virgins until marriage. About half the girls...from very religious and conservative families that you would never guess would have sex...ended up pregnant. I'm so glad I was a late bloomer and didn't start having sex until college.

I'm definitely from the old school that says it's your duty to scare the hell out of the boy dating your daughter. Sit him down for a chat. Meeting a chicks parents is scary enough...but if they threaten you a little...you'll be too nervous to perform.

My parents were VERY religous and never discussed sex because "we were to be virgins when we got married" Well lets face it that doesn't happen. I discuss EVERYTHING with Kassie. BTW. I got pregnant at 18. Alot of good my parents were ;)

I wasn't allowed to go out on a date until 16 and I think that was too young. I shouldn't have been allowed until 21 lol.

Give your daughter a small cannister of mace to take with her in her purse. Tell the kid you want your daughter home at a reasonable time and let your daughter take it from there :)

screw you hippie.

I had sex to a 14 year old girl when I was 17 ... it was great!

I was at the bathroom at a party of some kind somewhere in sthlm .. and when I got out she waiting for me, just pushed me back in and fucking raped me. then she tore off one of my necklaces (??) and left. shit that was great!

but I felt too old even then, I didn't know her age at the time you know.. so you can't really blame me.

anyways, what I'm saying is, it happends ... deal with it, just teach her the right ways with condoms and shit.

and for him, better play nice and he'll like you ... then he'll feel part of the family and THEN he will think twice before doing something stupid. (I did!)

Angel

You could always call him out at the front door and hand him a pamplet on teenage pregnancy that should do the trick for a 17yr old boy ;) Of course your daughter would probably be mortified :(

Hey I like that one Angel.

I did bring him out the front door. Discussed that I had spoke with my daughter and that I knew she had spoke to him explaining she was a virgin I wanted to make sure he was ok dating her if she was going to stay that way. He said. "really I'm not in a rush", I also told him if she's out with him he should not be drinking and I would expect a call so I can pick up my daughter if he picked up a drink. Since he drives. And he is responsible to keep her sfe when she leaves the house with him blah blah blah

That's a tuff one. You can do all you want to keep them from dating but I think in the long it only makes it worse. Kids will find a way no matter what you do and I think the more you do to prevent the harder they work at it.

She's a good kid and she's in High School. I never understood why most high schools are from the 9th grade to the 12th grade. Mine was 10th to 12th so it was never really a problem. In this case though, I like the group dates idea and in the future I would discourage one on one dates till next year.

I do think she's very mature for her age but it doesn't mean they can handle every situation like an adult. Most adults can't handle situations like adults so I would really try to hold off on dating till next year or if you set up some rules like she has to be back by 10 or 11. She has to call you at least once from the date. Like, if she goes to a movie she has to call before and after. The more she has to check in the harder it will be to do anything. Also I would limit any date to four hours or less. That's enough time for dinner and a movie. Sure stuff can happen in that time. But most likely they are gonna be out friends and really helps to limit their time alone with each other.

I agree. God forbid that I ever have a 14 year old daughter, but if I did, when she started dating at 21, every boy would see me cleaning my gun when he came to pick her up. I might even take him for a trip to the range so he can see how good of a shot I am.

DALLAS (Reuters) - Texas education officials on Friday approved health textbooks for high school students that extol the virtues of sexual abstinence but only make passing mention of contraceptives, which critics say violates state regulations and endangers the health of teens.

The battle in Texas has national implications because the state is the second-biggest market for textbooks in the United States. Books approved by the state's school board are typically marketed nationally.

The 15-member Texas Board of Education approved four books, all of which promote a birth control program based on abstinence. Three make no mention of contraceptives, while one makes passing references to condoms.

State regulations require information on contraceptives to be included in the sexual education curriculum, but board members said the books meet state standards because contraceptives are mentioned in separate supplements or in the teacher's edition.

Critics said the board bowed to social conservatives and their approval will leave Texas teens with inadequate information about their health.

"Instead of doing the responsible thing and providing high school students with life-saving information about sex and health, the Board of Education has left them to fend for themselves and get information from each other and sources like the Internet and MTV," said Samantha Smoot, president of the Texas Freedom Network, which battles social conservatives.

The texts are likely to appear in classrooms in August 2005 -- where they could be the standard text for about 10 years. The publishers of the books are Holt, Rinehart and Winston, Glencoe/McGraw Hill and Thomson Delmar Learning, which is owned by the Thomson Corp . Holt is owned by Reed Elsevier PLC and Reed Elsevier NV .

Many current textbooks in Texas have more information on contraceptives than the ones the board approved.

Surveys indicate a wide majority of U.S. parents support a strong abstinence message to teens in sex education.

According to Centers for Disease Control figures, Texas has been among the top five states in the country for teenage pregnancies for several years.

When he was governor of Texas, George W. Bush pushed for an abstinence-based sexual education curriculum.

The board also asked on Friday for a change in the definition of marriage for separate middle school health books after a conservative member of the board said new language was needed to replace code words she thought promoted a homosexual agenda.

Board member Terri Leo, a Republican, said terms such as "couples" and "adults" should be replaced with terms such as: husband, wife, mother and father. She wanted to make sure the textbooks did not advocate same-sex marriage.

The board approve language saying: "Marriage is a life-long union between a husband and wife."

The board rejected a proposal from Leo asking for language saying: "homosexuals, lesbians and bisexuals as a group are more prone to self-destructive behavior like depression, illegal drug use and suicide."

I expect a LOT more stories like this over the next few years.

Also, I pray to god I never have a daughter. I'd be a mess of a parent with a girl being super overprotective while I'd let a son get away with just about anything.

I lost my virginity when I was 17 and didn't have a child until I was 21.. Guess i'm ahead of the game.. but when it comes time for my daughters to date, I will be assessing their mental maturity as opposed to their age to consider how ready they are. Sex isn't a game, and I don't want my girls to make the same mistakes so many others do.. A super important part of that is to have an open line of communication with your kids, and not have them afraid to tell you the truth. If you find out your teenager has been doing something they shouldn't, freaking out won't do anything but alienate them. Better to treat them respectfully and talk to them like a mature person when issues arise, then they won't be afraid to come to you on the important stuff :) I'm sure your daughter will be fine, Lyn :)

Side Note: Half the reason I DIDN'T lose my virginity at 14 and have a kid by 18 was because I HAD that open line of unprejudiced communication with my grandmother (who raised me). She treated me with respect and we discussed things, and even when she didn't like what I did, she didn't freak on me, we talked about it and I was never afraid to go to her, even when I knew she wouldn't like what I'd done.

Boy, I can't WAIT till my daughter is 14.

I'd try to handle it as calmly as possible.

If it was a surprise when this guy came to the door, he'd be cooling his heels while I spoke with my daughter in private.

I'd make sure she was aware of how important birth control was and guage MY reaction on hers. If she was freaking out because she thought it was gross, or whatever, I'd send her on her way.

If she came back with something that suggested she'd HAD or planned to have sex, I'd give her $5 and made sure she at least bought a condom before doing anything that night (mental note-buy condoms when my daughter turns 12).

The next day, I'd talk to her about going on the pill. If she was all for it, I'd take her to the doctor and pay the bill every month. Better to pay $30 a month, than have a new baby in the household.

The worst thing you can do imo is to stop her from seeing the guy. You can't control her 24 hours a day. She'll either find out the guy is an idiot, or who knows, maybe he's a good shit and one day they'll get married. I hope that both her AND my son have a few relations before they get married though, and get some life experience. The good and the bad.
