View Full Version : MP NHL Playoffs Challenge!

Okay thought it would be a little fun to have a contest with the NHL Playoffs starting tomorrow! :)

This contest will be easy as its all pretty much just guessing so ANYONE can win and it will also run the whole length of the play offs so YOU MUST come back to make your predictions for each round if you want a chance in hell to win but fear not for you that are not fans of hockey I will keep this thread updated as to when you must make your selections by etc..

So to get this started now some basic info's for the ones unfamiliar with hockey.

The first round of the NHL Playoffs features 16 Teams consisting of 8 total series.

8 teams and 4 series on the EAST and 8 teams and 4 series on the WEST

A series is won by the first team to win 4 games.

So in other terms its a best of 7 series

No more then 7 games can be played in a series and no fewer than 4 games can be played.

Below are all the match ups and the corresponding number beside the teams name is where they finished in the regular season in positioning so obviously (1) is first and (8) is eighth etc... so if your 1st you SHOULD have a much better chance of beating the 8th place team.

EAST

(1) Pittsburgh Penguins vs. (8) New York Islanders
(2) Montreal Canadiens vs. (7) Ottawa Senators
(3) Washington Capitals vs. (6) New York Rangers
(4) Boston Bruins vs. (5) Toronto Maple Leafs

WEST

(1) Chicago Blackhawks vs. (8) Minnesota Wild
(2) Anaheim Ducks vs. (7) Detroit Red Wings
(3) Vancouver Canucks vs. (6) San Jose Sharks
(4) St. Louis Blues vs. (5) Los Angeles Kings

To play all you need to do is copy and paste the above match ups into a new post and guess who will WIN each series and guess how many games it will take... so for example.

(1) Pittsburgh Penguins vs. (8) New York Islanders -- Pittsburgh 6 games
(2) Montreal Canadiens vs. (7) Ottawa Senators -- Ottawa 4 games
(3) Washington Capitals vs. (6) New York Rangers -- New York 7 games
(4) Boston Bruins vs. (5) Toronto Maple Leafs -- Toronto 6 games

etc... makes sense? it should because its easy!

So do that for all 8 series and once all the series are completed I will award points by 2 critiera.

1 Points will be awarded for each correct guess on games played in a series ... Total of 8 points can be won.
2 Points will be awarded for each correct guess of the winner of each series ... Total of 16 points can be won.

Making it possible to earn 24 points in the 1st round.

This will continue through all 4 rounds of the playoffs with some minor adjustments as we go along!

Winner of the game will be the user who has the MOST points at the end of the playoffs.

In the event of a tie, the tiebreaker will first be who got more winners of each series right through the whole playoffs and if it is still tied after that the second tie breaker will be determined later with an additional question that will be posted in the final round of the playoffs.

PRIZE WILL BE $1.50 FOR EVERY POINT THE WINNER HAS AT THE END!

So if you finish with say 63 points you will get $94.50 :woot:

Any questions please post them and do note that once you post you can NOT edit your selections if you want to edit them too fucking bad! I'll be watching!

Have Fun! :)

ALL ENTRIES MUST BE POSTED BY TOMORROW NIGHT 8:00PM EST!

There's enough parity in the two conferences that anything is possible. The one thing we can be absolutely sure about is this:

Vancouver Fans will find some way of relating a missed call to a conspiracy between Gary Bettman and the Referees. Bonus points for the inclusion of Colin Campbell and Gregory, his son playing for Boston.
CBC will show biased commentating in favour of the Leafs, as will Hockey Central and certainly Coach's corner (in between some loud redneck commentary)
Certain Habs players will embellish beyond belief and then act surprised when they get caught and sent off for a penalty.
Neither Grabovski nor Alex Burrows will bite anyone this year.
The Boston / Leafs series should be ridiculously physical.
Philly players will not travel to Melon arena to cheer on their State rivals.
Craig Anderson is going to stand on his head and Erik Karlsson is going to inject a whole new life into Ottawa. People will continue to underestimate Ottawa as they have all season.

You know... there are some so-called Leafs fans that do that with Ottawa.. travel to Ottawa and then boo every time Alfredsson touches the puck. That actually embarrases me as a Leaf's fan. Classless people exist everywhere. I'd take Alfie on the Leafs any day of the week, even at 40 years old.

Was never much of a fan of Alfie and now I just cant help but laugh at him because of this bone head comment he made years ago.

"I just think (Ovechkin has) everything you could want. He's a great skater, he's a great stickhandler, good one-on-one and he's got a really good work ethic. He doesn't get frustrated if he gets hit, either. He gets up and keeps playing. Not like the other rookie (Crosby), who starts crying. I think there's a big difference in the attitude."

Good Call Alfie ... AO is still shit all while Crosby has dominated the league won a cup and a gold medal!

Rongo
04-30-2013, 11:38 AM
To be fair, that comment was in their first years and AO was miles above Crosby and Crosby was actually an endless whiner, just as he was while in the QMJHL. We used to see him play a lot here. I live in Cole Harbour.. it's all about Crosby here. My nephews used to play with him and can attest to his ridiculously high compete level. But they can also attest to his incessant whining he did during his junior days.

However, he has absolutely emerged as a leader and has certainly matured. But that comment is hardly relevant all these years later as it relates to an entirely different time. I'm not sure it';s worth clinging onto all these years later. At the time it was said, it was largely accurate.

Sorry I misread your post as the first round you can get 24 points max and you are assuming the format/points stay the same through the whole playoffs making it a total of 45 points possible max.

that is not the case as stated

So do that for all 8 series and once all the series are completed I will award points by 2 critiera.

1 Points will be awarded for each correct guess on games played in a series ... Total of 8 points can be won.
2 Points will be awarded for each correct guess of the winner of each series ... Total of 16 points can be won.

This will continue through all 4 rounds of the playoffs with some minor adjustments as we go along!

As a Leafs fan, I actually thought last night was a great game. Certainly not great for a win. But great for a dose of reality for all the inexperienced players in the Leafs lineup. Boston played just as bad as the Leafs did down the stretch. But Boston picked it up like the veteran presence they are and played like it throughout the game. This is a lesson the Leafs needed to learn.

This is the first group of kids this team has had in years, most years the fairweather fans, media and boneheaded management trade off all assets for a quick fix of an overpriced free agent. Or they simply run blue chip talent out of town (Larry Murphy anyone?). I think the kids earned the opportunity to play in this series... and facing a team that has dominated them is important. Take no easy road.

Win or lose, I consider this series an investment into the core maturity of this group.

The Habs certainly lost their composure last night. In the end, the extracurricular antics went beyond embarrassing. It's incredible to me what has happened to such a storied franchise. Even as a Leafs fan, you could always appreciate the skill and talent of the great Habs teams. I think last night, the entire team, including the coach, embarrassed the entire organization.

On that note, and to be fair, I hate the poor sportmanship displayed by any team when they are getting beaten -- you know -- to send a message. Send a message about what, how such poor losers you are? The amount of dirty stickwork and elbows and such was ridiculous. I love a good clean physical game, but that was an embarrassing third period to watch as a hockey fan.

Mailman, I don't think a lot of people considered the Islanders as any sort of threat. But they came into the playoffs with a ton of confidence. They were the one team I was hoping would stay separated from the race with the Leafs. I had wanted the Leafs to play Boston (despite everyone wanting Montreal). I think the Bruins have the largest psychological edge on the Leafs and they needed to face it head on when it matters most.

I've said it before and will say it again. Win or lose, the young Leafs group needs this type of adversity, both mental and physical. The only way to get better is to challenge yourself against better teams.

Mr. Goat
05-06-2013, 10:03 AM
I did not really want the Isles or the Leafs ... 2 teams that have not made it in some time and have nothing to lose!

Will either win the cup NOPE but do they have a chance at an upset or 2 for sure!

The Pens are better against the Isles and should still win it ... I just really don't want to play the Leafs ... the Pens always seem to have trouble with them .... Go Bruins?

I will admit I though yesterdays games was gonna be BORING ..... a Saturday afternoon game in Long Island! To my surprise the bandwagon was in FULL effect one of the loudest games I have heard for any hockey game all season!

regardless if you think the officials have made mistakes, there should be zero tolerance for any physical attack by a player on an official, condoning anything like this is insane

you just worry about the diving on your team before you worry about what other teams are doing!

Same here. I thought SL was going to go pretty deep.

With Pittsburgh, I see Fleury is back to his unpredictable self. I'll bet the higher-ups in Pittsburgh Management, not to mention teammates, are awfully glad right now to have a backup goalie who can outperform their starter.

Well MAF let in some softies but the team also played like shit in front of him so not completely his fault... 5-0 shut out in game one shows the team showed up after that it was more of the same... switch it up with V and he played great as did the team in the first game with him in the next and as for last night again another POS game only V kept them in it.. he stole that game for the pens!

I think MAF is an extremely inconsistent goalie. If he played on a team that had less defensive capabilities than Pitt has, he'd probably be a backup goalie. Pitt's defense and high power offense often conceals his weaknesses. I've always felt he was your weak link.
