Over the weekend I inventoried our digital media library
for the first time and was blown away. I'm totally glad
I did it now, but at the time dayum...

Who's got a media server (or just an extensive movie
collection) and when was the last time
you inventoried everything?

I have an old Dell white box server (I think its a Dual Xeon - Precision 620) that I have put TWO 2TB IDE hard drives in, and is our network media server at home ...

To be perfectly honest ... I don't think I have ever "taken inventory" of it ... LMAO!

Stuff just gets duped there to die .... and every now and again I will clear out the stuff that has long expired and started to decompose ...

I gave up on taking inventory once my CD collection reached 500 CDs. Still have them all, sitting up in my closet.

As for movies, I must have about 100. Still on DVDs.

Spannow is trying to talk me into putting everything onto a media server.... and I'm sure I will some day.

We have a similar setup.
On the one hand we have a mainbox with a
couple of TBs and all the stuff we watch regularly on it.

Items we've watched and don't plan to revisit for a
while get archived off to what I call "long-term storage".

It can be a bear to make the transition to digital media
from physical discs but once you do it's hard to imagine
ever going back to old fashion discs.

If you ever do an inventory It'd be cool to see
what you've got in there...

We had maybe a thousand DVDs give or take. Started
ripping them one at a time between two laptops. Over
the course of a couple of months we'd gone through
probably 80% of our library. What had been ripped we
then sold to a used DVD place and we made at least
$500 back by doing this (easily financing a digital
media server build project). It totally paid for itself!

What do you use to rip your DVD's to some type of digital media?

I have over 500 DVD's Id love to convert them to a digital file but not sure where to even start?

HandBrake (http://handbrake.fr/) Mailman, it's free and works like a charm!

As for "where to even start" just grab a handful of dics,
start ripping them and build a stack of "done" discs.
Before you know it you'll have several skyscrapers in
your office, living room, wherever - then it's time to
sell them back and get paid!

I started putting my dvd collection on a external hard drive and have it hooked up to the big TV. I have several laptops, so I get one going and then start another. Check in a while, then repeat

I'm intimately familiar with that scenario ShiftyEyedBstrd.
It completely sucked during the process but afterwords hallelujah!
I could never go back to buying discs like a prehistoric cavemen! :lol1:

awesome to have everything all in one place, and when someone comes over and you fire it up with a pretty front end, always makes them wish they had the setup, lol.

Humm just tried it out quickly seems there's a bit of a learning curve as I got a 10 second video that was all fucked up when I tried..

But thanks I'll have to play with it more.

Removes encryption and does everything quickly, and you can pick and choose if you want to dump anything like italian subtitles or whatever.
