cause I was actually just replacing a 20 gig drive with my operating system and program files on it. So now I have multiple 80 gig drives, broken down into smaller partitions for different programs and data.

fuck..I guess I've only got one 80 gig hard drive now. Evidently the old one that was find this morning with EVERYTHING on it (so I could shuffle the other drives while I installed a new primary) now won't be recognized by windows no matter how I install it and set the jumpers.

Are they different manufacturers drives? I have seen this with mixing Seagate and Maxtor drives where you have to make the Seagate drive the master or else it just doesnt' show up. Fixed the whole problem with another IDE controller, every drive is a master on it's own channel. Now I just buy everything the same manufacturer for the machines.

Of course, the painfully obvious, mixing IDE and SCSI can be a nightmare if you don't have the right controllers. Technically it shouldn't be an issue with the IDE always the boot drive, but not if you don't have controllers that don't like each other.

they're both hitachi deskstars, matched in fact. I thought I might keep an eye out for a IDE raid card around and this way I can stripe the drives for higher performance. I'm going to take the rest of the night off and look at it with fresh eyes in the morning.

I got this solved finally.
It seems that last time I partitioned drives on my system, it was set to create dynamic drive partitions instead of the normal ones. Evidently win2000 pro can't mount a second drive with dynamic partitions correctly. But as soon as I called hitatchi support, within 5 minutes they had me set up. Didn't ask for my serial numbers, when I bought the drives, if I have warrenty or anything. I'm very pleased with them, think I'll stick with them for my drives

Sounds like you got a good tech on the phone there. Most are just sitting there reading from scripts. Interesting thing was that I was just reading a tech article on that very problem yesterday and never thought of it applying to you.
